Jenny says:

(Health and Beauty) My kids all have very sensitive skin and theforere are prone to diaper rash often. As a researcher by nature (it’s also what I get paid to do) I did a tremendous amount of research on diaper rash, its causes, prevention and treatment. I consulted with two pediatrician friends and then basically performed product testing on every product I could get my hands on. I also compounded some of my own ointments for use depending on what the underlying cause of the rash was. Most diaper rash is caused by one of three things: Yeast, contact with bile acids in feces when the child has a stomach bug or frequent stools for any reason, or just general irritation from exposure to the contents of feces and urine.Important to note: If your child has a yeast infection, this ointment won’t work. Neither will any other ointment that doesn’t contain an antifungal I don’t care how good it is. If your child has recently taken (or is currently taking) antibiotics this will likely be a problem, but your child doesn’t need to be on an antibiotics to get a yeast infection. I give my kids additional active cultures- probiotics (biogaia)- whenever they go on antibiotics because eating Greek yogurt daily was just not enough. Sometimes, they still get a yeast infection. After much experience, I have learned to recognize those as soon as they sprout up. I treat them with a homemade compound of 1 tube Burts Bees, 1 tsp Cortizone 10 (or any 1% hydrocortisone cream) can leave this out- and 1-2 tbsp of 2% miconazole nitrate or nystatin cream. I also add 2-3 tbsp of Lansinoh lanolin cream if I have it I soften it in the sun for about 30 minutes first I mix all the ingredients together Then, I apply it liberally to the affected area and try to change the diaper every hour or as soon as I realize it is wet/dirty. I have also let my kids go diaperless. Messy and not always practical. I am not a doctor, but I have discussed this compound with my pediatrician and one of my best friends who is a pediatrician and they both have tried it themselves and recommended it to other patients. If your child has a stomach bug or is having issues with diarrhea or frequent stools, you can also request a prescription from your pedi for a compound of aquaphor and 10% cholestyramine, which is a bile acid sequestrant. This will help to neutralize some of the acids in the stool so they will not cause the irritation on your baby’s bottom. If your child just has a contact diaper rash (general irritation) or you’re in need of a preventative, that is where the Burt’s Bees really becomes handy. Having tried Doctor Smith’s, Boudreaux’s (both kinds), Desitin (both kinds), A&D, Aquaphor, Gold Bond Powder, California Baby Calendula Cream, Triple Paste, Calmoseptine used by NICU nurses, Bag Balm and I am pretty sure I am forgetting a few. I even tried pouring Mylanta all over my baby’s bottom after reading several tips from other moms on the internet! NONE of them worked as well. Additionally, my girls part-time caretaker has been in the childcare industry for over 30 years. She has run her own daycare centers, worked as a nanny, run a licensed, in-home daycare as well as raised 3 children of her own. She had never used Burt’s Bees before and swore by Boudreaux’s. She used my ointment on my girls and is now a convert. She said it is by far the best she has ever used!!Just a side note: I personally do not understand the love for Boudreaux’s. The smell is awful, and it is the color of baby poop!! When I was using it, I had a few people think that my kids had a dirty diaper when they did not all because they thought the Boudreaux’s was poop! Now, add that to the fact that Boudreaux’s was totally ineffective in getting rid of my kids rash and you have someone completely baffled as to the reason why people use it at all. But, that is just my personal experience.I agree that the new plastic tube packaging is annoying, but I squeeze as much out as I can and then I cut the tube and use a popsicle stick (or a finger works too) to get the rest out. This works so well for us that I can look past the packaging.
