ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION?
The most common cause
of people seeking counselling is fear and sadness. It can take
some time for a person to even realize there is a difficulty and
then get the courage to approach a doctor, due to perceived
stigmatisation and lack of clarity about what mental health is.
Yet in the current medical model, where doctors have no time to
sit and listen; the person will usually be put on some
antipsychotic drug and added to a waiting list for a mental
health professional, which could involve a further wait of 6
months, as things worsen.
This mental illness
paradigm may cause long term problems, when advice and
engagement is needed immediately. Instead this further delay
causes a vicious reinforcement of lack of coping and further
loss of self-esteem and often prescription addiction into the
bargain.
It has been shown that
a large number of this waiting list 'spontaneously recover'.
This can be attributed to the drugs working, situations
improving or the person has been able to bury the grief
Often at the risk it will pop up again usually at the most
inopportune or vulnerable moment
Frequently the awaited appointment is with a Psychiatrist who
since they view mental disorder as a structural dissonance, will
apply some chemical cosh to alter mood. Too often this results in
a more malleable, but long term dependency on those pills,
paradoxically often with the very side effects that were the
problem! Unfortunately for this nice little earner between Big
Pharma and those practitioners writing those prescriptions has
become an awkward embarrassment of corruption and inducements.
Even Psychologist who concern themselves more with cognitive,
behavioural dysfunction or personality disorders are being
challenged about the efficacy of churning out socially compliant
automatons to cultures that may not be worth preserving.
You see fear and
sadness is not only a very real problem it is also very natural
and common. Most of us realise our sad periods because we also
know joy and many see that with time we will see the sunshine
and engage with life again sometime, though perhaps
differently. The problem when people can't even feel this glimmer of hope and
become fixed in that perception obsessed by helplessness and
morbid thoughts who need to talk, to someone there just for them
and as soon as possible. But this is not mental illness, if
caught early enough and without collapsing them into the mental
disorder industry.
You have the power within you at any time to
change your life
The most amazing transformation can
occur if the fear and sadness are tackled early enough.
Of course no-one knows who will be adversely affected
by being stuck into a prolonged incapacity because we
often have coping strategies that belie the image we
present to people. Neither do we need to be rushed
through a legitimate period of grief. It is often not
until you have been struck to your lowest that your
healing begins.
If you realise there is something wrong and you
find you aren't recovering from a trauma or that you are
stressed beyond what is necessary. It is usually
defined as 'madness' doing the same things over
and yet expect a different outcome. Its time to call a
halt and try something different - the help you need is
at hand.
Take a moment to step off the roundabout
and think out the
box.
What I am suggesting is that you have
the power, at any time to change your life
